Statement

“My brush is the engraving tool.”

Stanisław Borowski masterfully plays with the versatile design techniques of glass as a material. Over the years, an intensive body of work has developed that addresses the political issues of his time and human existence. Initially, he worked with simple, color-coated glass bodies, which he masterfully processed with self-made tools to engrave the images of his imagination into the thin glass skin. With the growing technical possibilities available to him over the years, mouth-blown, multi-layered hollow forms emerged, which are engraved and assembled with sculptures freely shaped on the glass pipe into complex sculptural compositions. In doing so, he constantly re-explores the technical limits of glass processing and gives the engraved image space-creating dimensions. The reciprocal effect between engraving and sculpture opens up new possibilities and externalizes the artist’s emotional worlds and moods.

Stanisław Borowski, one of the great names in the European studio glass movement of the late 1970s and the undisputed master of overlay engraving, has demonstrated an unprecedented quality with his engraved and sculptural works, convincingly presenting them to a broad public in numerous exhibitions across Europe, Asia, and the USA.

In 1990, he laid the foundation for today’s Borowski Glass Manufactory, which is one of the most renowned artistic glass studios in the world.
